Leasehold is a time-limited right to use a property, usually for up to 99 years, without ownership of the land passing over.
Once it expires, the right reverts to the owner of the land. In Dubai, leasehold is less often relevant for international buyers, because most sought-after locations are available as freehold.
Leasehold can appear cheaper in individual cases, but it limits resale, mortgageability and value growth. The difference from freehold should be clear before any purchase.
TAH view
We generally advise German-speaking buyers towards freehold. We only examine leasehold when a specific location requires it, and we set out the term transparently.
